The morning-feet principle
The bedroom rug's job is contact: bare feet on soft surface at every entry and exit from the bed. That defines the minimum — rug coverage wherever feet land, which means the sides (full length or the foot two-thirds) plus the foot of the bed. Everything beyond coverage is design preference.
The peek layout, defended
A rug starting under the foot-third of the bed (extending 1.5–2 ft past the foot and 9" past each side) delivers the morning-feet function and most of the visual at 5×8 prices. It is the standard rental-and-first-home move, and unlike the floating living-room rug, it does not read cheap — the bed anchors the composition.
Runners and the narrow room
Two 2.5-ft runners flanking the bed suit narrow rooms and king beds in small spaces; they stop at the nightstands and leave the under-bed zone bare. The runner look reads slightly hotel-modern, cleans easily, and costs half of a 9×12 — a legitimate third way rather than a compromise.
