The 24-inch rule
Dining chairs pull back ~20–24 inches to admit a seated human; the rug must extend that far past the table on every side. A 7-foot table needs a 10–11-foot rug. Undersized dining rugs fail visibly nightly — the chair that teeters on the rug's edge is the internet's most-mocked rug photo, and it is entirely preventable by arithmetic.
Pile height matters as much as size
Low-pile, flatweave, or indoor-outdoor rugs roll under chair legs smoothly; thick shag and high-pile rugs make every chair a beach on wheels. The best dining rugs run under 1/2" pile — which also cleans easier, a relevant fact in the room where food lands.
Shape follows the table
Rectangular tables take rectangular rugs with the 24-inch margin; round tables shine on round rugs (the margin becomes a radius); squares square it. The rug is the table's stage — matching shape keeps the composition intentional, and the margin math transfers directly (radius + 24 inches).
